Ofcom has given the owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks the go ahead to launch the fourth-generation (4G) mobile services.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has allowed Everything Everywhere, the owner of the Orange and T-Mobile networks, to use its existing bandwidth to launch fourth-generation (4G) mobile services.

The move means 4G, which allows much faster downloads, could launch in the UK earlier than previously planned.

Everything Everywhere gets 4G go-ahead from OfcomEverything Everywhere will be allowed to offer 4G services from 11 September.

Means faster browsing and video streaming for people. Can't wait for this.

Hope most mobile phones will be compatible such as my iPhone etc.

What do you think to 4G launching in the UK?

I heard today that to you use 4G you will need a 4G compatible phone.

Bit rubbish for people who have just got a phone.

Alright if you have the new iPad 2 though, I believe this is compatible with 4G.

Everything Everywhere, which will now be known as just EE.

EE is set to launch its 4G service in 16 cities across the UK this year (2012).

4G coverage in London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol is currently being tested ahead of launch.

Rivals have voiced concerns that EE had been given an unfair headstart by launching first.

Other cities to get the high-speed connectivity are Belfast, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and Southampton.

4G mobile technology will mean all of these locations will benefit from improved network access speeds, even indoors.

Is 4G coming to your city this year or do you have to wait a bit longer?

I've heard somewhere along the line that because of a threat of legal action from other companies Ofcom have given the spectrum to most of the service providers. Don't know 100% if this is true or not.

Although I've noticed since the iOS6 update on the iPhone my network is showing as EE more often than Orange - T-mobile.
